Prayers of the People – Form 4

B – Sundays after Pentecost – 3rd Sunday – Bishop Visitation – Father’s Day

Please join in the Prayers of the People, Form 4, found in the BCP, page 388.
In peace, let us pray to the Lord, saying: "
Hear our Prayer.”

Let us pray for the Church and for the world.
(Silence – each time slowly count: 1,2,3,4,5)

Grant, Almighty God, that all who confess your Name may be united in your truth, live together in your love, and reveal your glory in the world, especially for

Katherine, our Presiding Bishop, for Shannon and Ted, our own Bishops, for Susan our Bishop Suffragan Elect, for all bishops and other ministers, especially for Catherine and Sean, and for all the holy people of God.
(Silence) Lord, in your mercy… Hear our prayer.

Guide the people of this land, and of all the nations, in the ways of justice and peace; that we may honor one another and serve the common good, especially for our President, Barack, and for our Governor, Robert, for those in the armed forces of our country, and for all who live and work in our communities, Port Royal and Oak Grove.
(Silence) Lord, in your mercy… Hear our prayer.

Give us all a reverence for the earth as your own creation, that we may use its resources rightly in the service of others and to your honor and glory.
(Silence) Lord, in your mercy… Hear our prayer.

Bless all whose lives are closely linked with ours,

and grant that we may serve Christ in them, and love one another as he loves us,

especially for our fathers,

who have given us life and love, that we may show them respect and love,

and for those who today have been…

baptized: Joseph, Amber, and Kirsten,

confirmed: Brent, Samantha, Stephen, and Tucker,

received: Kerry, Thomas, Kenneth, and Andrea,

and reaffirmed: Cathy and Jimmy,

that they may be raised to the new life of grace through the gift of faith.

(Silence) Lord, in your mercy… Hear our prayer.

Comfort and heal all those who suffer in body, mind, or spirit; give them courage and hope in their troubles, and bring them the joy of your salvation, especially those on our parish prayer list, our family, and friends, and for fathers who have lost a child through death, that their faith may give them hope, and their family and friends support and console them.

(Silence) Lord, in your mercy… Hear our prayer.

We commend to your mercy all who have died, especially the members of our parish, our family, our friends, and our fathers, that your will for them may be fulfilled; and we pray that we may share with St. Peter and all your saints in your eternal kingdom.
(Silence) Lord, in your mercy… Hear our prayer.

(The Presider adds a concluding Collect.)

Prayer Book Page 306           The Thanksgiving over the Water

The Celebrant blesses the water, first saying

The Lord be with you.

People

And also with you.

Celebrant

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

People

It is right to give him thanks and praise.

Celebrant

We thank you, Almighty God, for the gift of water. Over it the Holy Spirit moved in the beginning of creation. Through it you led the children of Israel out of their bondage in Egypt into the land of promise. In it your Son Jesus received the baptism of John and was anointed by the Holy Spirit as the Messiah, the Christ, to lead us, through his death and resurrection, from the bondage of sin into everlasting life.

We thank you, Father, for the water of Baptism. In it we are buried with Christ in his death. By it we share in his resurrection. Through it we are reborn by the Holy Spirit. Therefore in joyful obedience to your Son, we bring into his fellowship those who come to him in faith, baptizing them in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

At the following words, the Celebrant touches the water

Now sanctify this water, we pray you, by the power of your Holy Spirit, that those who here are cleansed from sin and born again may continue forever in the risen life of Jesus Christ our Savior.

To him, to you, and to the Holy Spirit, be all honor and glory, now and forever. Amen.

Consecration of the Chrism

The Bishop may then consecrate oil of Chrism, placing a hand on the vessel of oil, and saying

Eternal Father, whose blessed Son was anointed by the Holy Spirit to be the Savior and servant of all, we pray you to consecrate this oil, that those who are sealed with it may share in the royal priesthood of Jesus Christ; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, for ever and ever. Amen.

Prayer Book Page 307           The Baptism (sit)

Each candidate is presented by name to the Celebrant, or to an assisting priest or deacon, who then immerses, or pours water upon, the candidate, saying

Sean  Joseph, Amber, Kirsten

N., I baptize you in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Then the Bishop or Priest places a hand on the person’s head, marking on the forehead the sign of the cross [using Chrism if desired] and saying to each one

Joseph, Amber, Kirsten

N., you are sealed by the Holy Spirit in Baptism and marked as Christ’s own forever. Amen.

Or this action may be done immediately after the administration of the water and before the preceding prayer.

A candle (which may be lighted from the Paschal Candle) may be given to each of the newly baptized or to a godparent (BCP, 313), using these or similar words:

Joseph, Amber, Kirsten

N., receive the light of Christ as a sign that you have passed from darkness to light.  Shine as his light in the world to the glory of God the Father.

When this action has been completed for all candidates, the Bishop or Priest, at a place in full sight of the congregation, prays over them, saying

Let us pray.

Heavenly Father, we thank you that by water and the Holy Spirit you have bestowed upon these your servants the forgiveness of sin, and have raised them to the new life of grace. Sustain them, O Lord, in your Holy Spirit. Give them an inquiring and discerning heart, the courage to will and to persevere, a spirit to know and to love you, and the gift of joy and wonder in all your works. Amen.

When all have been baptized, the Celebrant says

Let us welcome the newly baptized.

Celebrant and People

The Celebrant adds a concluding Collect (BCP 395):

Almighty God, by your Holy Spirit you have made us one with your saints in heaven and on earth: Grant that in our earthly pilgrimage we may always be supported by this fellowship of love and prayer, and know ourselves to be surrounded by their witness to your power and mercy. We ask this for the sake of Jesus Christ, in whom all our intercessions are acceptable through the Spirit, and who lives and reigns for ever and ever. Amen.

Prayers of the People June 3, 2012

Litany of Healing

(From The Book of Occasional Services)

Let us name before God those for whom we offer our prayers.

For those on our prayer list:

And any others you name at this time.  (Silence)

For those serving in our military:

God the Father, your will for all people is health and salvation;

We praise you and thank you, O Lord.

God the Son, you came that we might have life, and might have it more abundantly;

We praise you and thank you, O Lord.

God the Holy Spirit, you make our bodies the temple of your presence;

We praise you and thank you, O Lord.

Holy Trinity, one God, in you we live and move and have our being;

We praise you and thank you, O Lord.

Lord, grant your healing grace to all who are sick, injured, or disabled, that they may be made whole;

Hear us, O Lord of Life.

Grant to all who seek your guidance, and to all who are lonely, anxious, or despondent, a knowledge of your will and an awareness of your presence;

Hear us, O Lord of Life.

Mend broken relationships, and restore those in emotional distress to soundness of mind and serenity of spirit.

Hear us, O Lord of Life.

Bless physicians, nurses, and all others who minister to the suffering, granting them wisdom and skill, sympathy and patience.

Hear us, O Lord of Life.

Grant to the dying peace and a holy death and uphold by the grace and consolation of your Holy Spirit those who are bereaved;

Hear us, O Lord of life.

Restore to wholeness whatever is broken by human sin, in our lives, in our nation, and in the world;

Hear us, O Lord of life.

You are the Lord who does wonders:

You have declared your power among the peoples.

With you, O Lord, is the well of life:

And in your light, we see light.

Hear us, O Lord of life:

Heal us, and make us whole.

Let us pray in silence.

Post Communion Prayer

Almighty and eternal God, so draw our hearts to you, so guide our minds, so fill our imaginations, so control our wills, that we may be wholly yours, utterly dedicated to you; and then use us and send us out, we pray, as you will, and always to the glory and the welfare of your people; through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Amen.

A Word about our service today

Our sequence hymn, “O Threefold God of Tender Unity”   will be sung to the familiar hymn tune that we associate with “Abide with Me.”   This hymn, with its “imaginative Trinitarian text” comes from the New Zealand hymnal Alleluia Aotearoa.  The editors of Wonder, Love and Praise  chose this text for its expanded images of the divine.  The use of Divine attributes, “O blaze of radiance,” “most loving parent,” “life’s great unknown,”  and many other images in the hymn expand  the mystery of the Holy Trinity beyond the traditional words we associate with the Trinity and that we find in our opening hymn—“God in Three Persons, Blessed Trinity.”    The sequence hymn also points to the reality of the Trinitarian God in our human lives through phrases like “Felt in our loving, greater than our thought.”

The Prayers of the People for today and the postcommunion prayer are taken from “A Public Service of Healing, ” which is found The Book of Occasional Services, 1994.

These prayers are particularly appropriate for today because of their Trinitarian focus.   In addition, the emphasis on our brokenness and need for healing brings to mind the cry of Isaiah in the Old Testament reading for today:  “Woe is me!  I am lost.”

In the words of the postcommunion prayer we pray for the gifts that we receive when we journey into the loving heart of the Trinity, in order that we might be equipped to be sent out and used to the glory of God and for the welfare of those God sends us to serve.

The closing blessing for today, which is also from “A Public Service of Healing” refers to God in Trinitarian terms throughout.
