Christ in the House of Simon: – Dieric Bouts, 1415-1475

“Then turning toward the woman, he said to Simon, "Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you gave me no water for my feet, but she has bathed my feet with her tears and dried them with her hair. You gave me no kiss, but from the time I came in she has not stopped kissing my feet. You did not anoint my head with oil, but she has anointed my feet with ointment. Therefore, I tell you, her sins, which were many, have been forgiven; hence she has shown great love. But the one to whom little is forgiven, loves little." Then he said to her, "Your sins are forgiven." – Luke 7:44-48

THIRD Sunday after Pentecost

June 9, 2013, 11AM

“Soon after healing the centurion’s slave, Jesus went to a town called Nain, and his disciples and a large crowd went with him. As he approached the gate of the town, a man who had died was being carried out. He was his mother’s only son, and she was a widow; and with her was a large crowd from the town. When the Lord saw her, he had compassion for her and said to her, "Do not weep." Then he came forward and touched the bier, and the bearers stood still. And he said, "Young man, I say to you, rise!" The dead man sat up and began to speak…” – Luke 7:11-15

The Day of PENTECOST

May 19, 2013, 11AM

“When the day of Pentecost had come, the disciples were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability.” – Acts 2:1-4

Catherine has been in North Carolina this week and will return on Monday, May 13th.  Please keep her parents in your prayers this week.

Today’s loose offering goes to Catherine’s discretionary fund, which she uses to help people in need in this area

Today comes at a crucial time in the lectionary. On Thursday, May forty days after Easter, the ascension of Jesus into heaven occurred. It is also Easter 7, the last week in Easter prior to Pentecost, next Sunday.  Pentecost is the traditional date of the founding of the church.

Today, we are recognizing mothers on Mothers’ Day. See the insert.

Finally, we are also celebrating a new event, Founders’  Day remembering  the 177th anniversary of the  consecration of St. Peter’s as part of Founders’ Day: In 1836,  Bishop Richard Channing Moore’s pastoral address at the Diocesan Council in Fredericksburg, tells of the Consecration of St. Peter’s Church:  On Sunday, May 15, 1836 I went to Port Royal at which place I consecrated a new Church: a building which is a great ornament to the town, and reflects the greatest credit upon those by "whose munificence it has been erected, and which, I trust, will prove a blessing to them and to their children to their latest posterity. The congregation was very large and attentive during the whole service. Prayers were read by several of the clergy who attended on the occasion — the discourse was delivered by myself — the Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper was administered — I baptised three children and confirmed two persons. It gives me the greatest pleasure to mention that a very handsome large silver cup was presented for the use of the altar, by a benevolent gentleman in the Parish; and I have every reason to believe that the sound of an organ will soon accompany the voices of the congregation in singing the praises of God and of the Redeemer of mankind. The Rev. (William) Friend stands high in the estimation of his parish; and I trust will see the work of the Lord prosper tinder his pastoral care.”

This Founders’ Day we also are celebrating the 125th anniversary of the beginning of Rev. Sigismund S. Ware’s ministry in 1888. Ware would serve 30 years here.

If God has been glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself and will glorify him at once. Little children, I am with you only a little longer.
