The Thirteenth Sunday After Pentecost, Year B

Morning Prayer II

Ringing of the Bell

Prelude

Opening Hymn                                Come, we that love the Lord                                      LEVAS 12

Opening Sentence

I was glad when they said to me, “Let us go to the house of the Lord.” Psalm 122:1

Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor. (Silence is kept.)

Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us all our sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen us in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep us in eternal life. Amen.

The Invitatory and Psalter

Lord, open our lips.

And our mouth shall proclaim your praise.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. Alleluia.

Venite To God with gladness sing (sung to Darwall’s 148th)

To God with gladness sing, your Rock and Savior bless;
Into his temple bring your songs of thankfulness!
O God of might, to you we sing
Enthroned as King on heaven’s height!
God cradles in his hand the heights and depths of earth;
God made the sea and land, God brought the world to birth!
O God most high, we are your sheep;
On us you keep your shepherd’s eye!
Your heavenly Father praise, acclaim his only Son,
Your voice in homage raise to him who makes all one!
O Dove of peace, on us descend
That strife may end and joy increase!

The mercy of the Lord is everlasting: Come let us adore him.

The Psalm                                Psalm 34:15-22

The eyes of the Lord are upon the righteous,*
and his ears are open to their cry.
The face of the Lord is against those who do evil,*
to root out the remembrance of them from the earth.
The righteous cry, and the Lord hears them*
and delivers them from all their troubles.
The Lord is near to the brokenhearted*
and will save those whose spirits are crushed.
Many are the troubles of the righteous,*
but the Lord will deliver him out of them all.
He will keep safe all his bones;*
not one of them shall be broken.
Evil shall slay the wicked,*
and those who hate the righteous will be punished.
The Lord ransoms the life of his servants,*
And none will be punished who trust in him.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:
As it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

The Lessons

A Reading from Joshua 24:1-2a, 14-18

Then Joshua gathered all the tribes of Israel to Shechem, and summoned the elders, the heads, the judges, and the officers of Israel, and they presented themselves before God. And Joshua said to all the people, “Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: Now therefore revere the Lord, and serve him in sincerity and in faithfulness; put away the gods that your ancestors served beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the Lord. Now if you are unwilling to serve the Lord, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served in the region beyond the River or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living; but as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.” Then the people answered, “Far be it from us that we should forsake the Lord to serve other gods; for it is the Lord our God who brought us and our ancestors up from the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery, and who did those great signs in our sight. He protected us along all the way that we went, and among all the peoples through whom we passed; and the Lord drove out before us all the peoples, the Amorites who lived in the land. Therefore we also will serve the Lord, for he is our God.”

The Word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

Canticle H A Song of Hosea ( Read together in unison, seated )
Hosea 6:1-3

Come, let us return to our God,*
     who has torn us and will heal us.
God has struck us and will bind up our wounds,*
     after two days revive us,
On the third day, restore us, *
     that in God’s presence we may live.
Let us humble ourselves, let us strive to know the Lord,*
     whose justice dawns like morning light,
     its dawning as sure as the sunrise.
God’s justice will come to us like a shower,*
     like spring rains that water the earth.

A Reading from Ephesians 6:10-20

Be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his power. Put on the whole armor of God, so that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For our struggle is not against enemies of blood and flesh, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers of this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, so that you may be able to withstand on that evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm. Stand therefore, and fasten the belt of truth around your waist, and put on the breastplate of righteousness. As shoes for your feet put on whatever will make you ready to proclaim the gospel of peace. With all of these, take the shield of faith, with which you will be able to quench all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

Pray in the Spirit at all times in every prayer and supplication. To that end keep alert and always persevere in supplication for all the saints. Pray also for me, so that when I speak, a message may be given to me to make known with boldness the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I may declare it boldly, as I must speak.

The Word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

Canticle P A Song of the Spirit ( Read together in unison, seated )

Revelation 22:12-17

“Behold, I am coming soon,” says the Lord,
“and bringing my reward with me,*
    to give to everyone according to their deeds.
“I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last,*
    The beginning and the end.”
“Blessed are those who do God’s commandments,
“That they may have the right to the tree of life,*
and may enter the city through the gates.
“I, Jesus, have sent my angel to you,*
    with this testimony for all the churches.
“I am the root and the offspring of David,*
    I am the bright morning star.”
“Come!” says the Spirit and the Bride;*
    “Come!” let each hearer reply!
“Come forward, you who are thirsty,*
     let those who desire take the water of life as a gift.

A Reading from John 6:56-69

Jesus said, “Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood abide in me, and I in them. Just as the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so whoever eats me will live because of me. This is the bread that came down from heaven, not like that which your ancestors ate, and they died. But the one who eats this bread will live forever.” He said these things while he was teaching in the synagogue at Capernaum. When many of his disciples heard it, they said, “This teaching is difficult; who can accept it?” But Jesus, being aware that his disciples were complaining about it, said to them, “Does this offend you? Then what if you were to see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before? It is the spirit that gives life; the flesh is useless. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life. But among you there are some who do not believe.” For Jesus knew from the first who were the ones that did not believe, and who was the one that would betray him. And he said, “For this reason I have told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted by the Father.” Because of this many of his disciples turned back and no longer went about with him, So Jesus asked the twelve, “Do you also wish to go away?” Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom can we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and know that you are the Holy One of God.”

The Word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

Sermon                                                                                                          Roger Key

The Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Offertory

Walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself for us, an
offering and sacrifice to God. Ephesians 5:2

The Prayers

The Lord be with you.
And also with you.

Let us pray.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

Suffrages

Show us your mercy, O Lord;
And grant us your salvation.
Clothe your ministers with righteousness;
Let your people sing with joy.
Give peace, O Lord, in all the world;
For only in you can we live in safety.
Lord, keep this nation under your care;
And guide us in the way of justice and truth.
Let your way be known upon earth;
Your saving health among all nations.
Let not the needy, O Lord, be forgotten;
Nor the hope of the poor be taken away.
Create in us clean hearts, O God;
And sustain us with your Holy Spirit.

Collect for the 13th Sunday after Pentecost

Grant, O merciful God, that your Church, being gathered together in unity by your Holy Spirit, may show forth your power among all peoples, to the glory of your Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

A Collect for Peace ( Read in Unison )

O God, the author of peace and lover of concord, to know you is eternal life and to serve you is perfect freedom: Defend us, your humble servants, in all assaults of our enemies; that we, surely trusting in your defense, may not fear the power of any adversaries; through the might of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

For Social Justice

Grant, O God, that your holy and life-giving Spirit may so move every human heart, and especially the hearts of the people of this land, that barriers which divide us may crumble, suspicions disappear, and hatreds cease; that our divisions being healed, we may live in justice and peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

(Sing “Our fathers’ God, to thee” here )

For the Harvest of Lands and Waters

O gracious Father, You open your hands and fill all things living with abundance: Bless the lands and waters and multiply the harvests of the world; let your Spirit go out to renew the face of the earth; show your loving-kindness, that our land may give her increase; and save us from selfish use of what you so graciously give us, that people everywhere may give your thanks; through Christ Jesus our Lord. Amen.

A Prayer for Mission

Lord Jesus Christ, you stretched out your arms of love on the hard wood of the cross that everyone might come within the reach of your saving embrace: So clothe us in your Spirit that we, reaching forth our hands in love, may bring those who do not know you to the knowledge and love of you; for the honor of your name. Amen.

For those on our prayer list

Merciful Lord, who has taught us in your holy Word that you do not willingly afflict or grieve us: Look with compassion upon the sorrows of those for whom we offer our prayers, for those on our prayer list and all of those for whom we now pray, either silently or aloud. (Silence) Remember them, O Lord, in your mercy, nourish their souls with patience, comfort them with a sense of your goodness, lift up your countenance upon them, and give them your peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

For those in the Armed Forces of our Country

Almighty God, we commend to your gracious care and keeping all the men and women of our armed forces at home and abroad, especially those on our prayer list. (Read military prayer list here). Defend them day by day with your heavenly grace; strengthen them in their trials and temptations; give them courage to face the perils which beset them; and grant them a sense of your abiding presence wherever they may be; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

A General Thanksgiving

Almighty God, Father of all mercies, we your unworthy servants give you humble thanks for all your goodness and loving-kindness to us and to all whom you have made. We bless you for our creation, preservation, and all the blessings of this life; but above all for your immeasurable love in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ; for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory. And we pray, give us such an awareness of your mercies, that with truly thankful hearts we may show forth your praise, not only with our lips, but in our lives, by giving up ourselves to your service, and by walking before you in holiness and righteousness all our days; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory throughout all ages. Amen.

Closing                                    Hymn Onward, Christian soldiers                 H 562

Glory to God, whose power, working in us, can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine: Glory to him from generation to generation in the Church, and in Christ Jesus for ever and ever. Amen.
