Tree Damage – Jan 2-3, 2022 – the Yew tree

This is a before and after picture of our former yew tree.

St. Peter’s suffered tree damage on the evening of Jan 2 and into the early part of Jan 3, 2022. It is most pronounced on our Yew tree which was destroyed. We lost major branches on our pines and some sporadic damage on the Saucer Magnolia and the magnolias closer to the river. The yews grow slowly and in Europe there are many over a thousand years old so its loss is a major blow here.

According to the Weather Service, during the evening of January 2, low pressure began to strengthen over Alabama/Georgia. Meanwhile, a cold front was moving southward across the local area. Temperatures were still in the 60s with rain during the evening of January 2 as the cold front approached.

Colder air quickly filtered in behind the front as steady precipitation was ongoing, dropping temperatures into the 30s-40s by 4-5 AM on 1/3. A base of sleet formed. By morning it had turned to snow at rapid rates of 1-2″+ per hour The snow was a heavy wet snow which affected the evergreens unable to withstand the snow. Accumulation was up to a foot in spots.
