Tenebrae

Unlike the other Easter services, Tenebrae doesn’t relate to a specific Holy Week event as Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter. It sets a mood and brings you through the Holy Week story through a set of "shadows". Each shadow generally has a reading from Luke, a Psalm and a hymn. The shadows move through the agony of  last week- Betrayal, Agony of the Spirit, Denial, Accusation, Crucifixion, Death and Burial – symbolized by the lighted candles. As the service progresses, the candles are snuffed out as Jesus life was. The candle in the end, the Christ candle,  is taken away seemingly saying that evil won. However, dramatically a noise is heard at the end and the Christ candle is brought back indicating that Christ has triumphed.

The combination of a reading, a psalm which Jesus would have known and hymn creates a series of acts. The hymns are very moving, solemn and stark. Some are closer to chants. This service featured Helmut and Brad in a workout on violin and keyboards which culminated in a duet between Crystal and Nancy on "Were you there where they crucified my Lord?" Charles did a wonderful job as acolyte extinguishing the candles and handling the Christ candle at the end.

The service began at 7pm and this year in full sunlight as earlier colder clouds broke in time for the service. However, as sunset progressed moving into the dark of the night so did this service.

The story was inside and out.  The weather was continued cool from the weekend. Two hours before the service there were threatening clouds. The unsettled weather moved toward full sunlight in a short amount of time captured above in the pictures.

23 came to this service. We thank Thom Guthrie for providing his voice to the choir as well as the violin work of Helmut, the voices of Nancy and Crystal and the overall music direction of Brad.
