Port Royal Christmas Celebration, Dec. 11, 2015

Port Royal Christmas Celebration, Dec. 11, 2015  (full size gallery)

Over 100 children participated in the annual Port Royal Tree lighting. While attendance seemed slow at the beginning it picked up – especially when it was known that pizza was on the menu!  The place was soon filled.

There were five groups collaborating for this event – Town of Port Royal, Parks and Rec, Caroline’s Promise, St. Peter’s Episcopal, and Memorial Baptist. The two churches took care of the dinner – St. Peter’s the pizza and Memorial Baptist the vegetables. Andrea from St. Peter’s handled the hot chocolate.

Nancy and Donnell from Parks and Rec kept the evening going and organized

After a pizza dinner the children filed out to a darkened tree. Nancy passed out ornaments for decorating the tree which was soon lit.  Numerous photos were taken outside the tree and the children had an opportunity to run in the dark and sing carols like "Joy to the World."  It was clear and very warm – in the 60’s unusual for this time of year.

Soon it was time to walk around to the side of the firehouse. Santa arrived in a Port Royal Fire engine and led the children back into the firehouse.  Children stood in line waiting for their change to be with Santa. Each child received a parent and a picture was taken of each child.

Children in three age groups then played a variation of musical chairs. The children of an age group gathered in a circle and presents were put into the circle. As the music played, presents were passed back and forth. When the music stopped, a child would receive the present he/she was holding. There were plenty of wrapped presents for all – separated by sex and age. Hats off to those who prepared the presents.

As this was going on two cakes were cut that said- "Merry Christmas" and  "Happy Birthday."  A wonderful way to top off the evening.

A great opportunity for fellowship, song and good tidings.  Thanks to all groups who helped and parents who brougth their children.
