Altarpiece update, May 18, 2016

Another form of outreach is the work we are doing to restore the Altarpiece.

Our lead conservator Cleo Mullins continued her work on the center section, uncovering the original color of the central cross. We have seen it as gold which was an actually a brass paint. The original was a darker shade of brown to make it look like wooden cross. The blue color above is the original color of the background rather than the dark brown as we have seen it.

She believes that the artist for the wooden tablets and the central cross artists were the same. She added that looking at a 3-D version of both tablets and central cross shows a less sure hand on the central cross which is much larger than the tablets. Apparently, the artist was more comfortable working with smaller figures.
