St. Peter’s in the July 4 Port Royal Celebration

St. Peter’s participated in support of the Port Royal, July 4 celebration, their 16th year.

We did several tours for guests, acted as a place of rest and spotlighted our music – Marilyn on her harp which filled the center section at times after 11am.  Many people enjoyed her playing.

Nancy and Thom Guthrie led a hymn sing in the afternoon for about 30. Songs included "America the Beautiful", "Faith of our Fathers", "My Country Tis’ of Thee" and the "Star Spangled Banner".  Thom delighted the crowd with an impromptu organ concert. We also had slide shows through the day of the church in 2013 and 2014 as well as shots demonstrating the "Beauty of St. Peter’s."

Special thanks go out for Andrea, Susan and the Wisdoms for sitting in the St. Peter’s table on the green. They sold several cookbooks, post cards and made over $140 dollars. Johnny was around and had to do a fixit job early in the day on the siding. We collected $34 in other donations at the church.

At 10am the ringing of St. Peter’s bell began the main historical celebration (The bell also rang for the Declaration of Independence). St. Peter’s was the site for St. Andrew’s legion lining up before entering the area on Robert Bryan’s lot for the history segment of the day. They entered the area and played "Amazing Grace". Mike Newman spoke on the Star Spangled Banner and led the crowd in the singing. Cookie lectured as president of Historic Port Royal on early history, including her own family’s entrance , the Powers family, in the 18th century. Mike read the Declaration and then replaced the British flag with the American. John Sellers lectured on three women in Lincoln’s life. John spent 25 years as an archivist at the Library of Congress. Our parishoners had many roles in the celebration.

Despite the overcast and threatening weather the crowd for the celebrationn seemed larger than last year.
