          The TWENTY Second Sunday after Pentecost

November 13, 2011

Parable of the Talents

“But the man who received one went off and dug a hole in the ground and buried his master’s money” (Mt 25:18).

ST. Peter’s Episcopal Church

Port Royal, VA

All Saints Sunday, Nov. 6 – Prayers of the People

Prayers of the People

With all our heart and with all our mind, let us pray to the Lord.

For the Church Universal, that we and all of its members may be bound together in love and obedience to you, united in one body by the one Spirit, and  inspired by the example of the saints who have gone before us,

We pray to you, O Lord.

For our nation, for the President, for the Governors of the States, for our local leaders,  and to all in administrative authority,  that they may be inspired by the example of our founding fathers, and that they may be filled with your wisdom and grace as they exercise their duties,

We pray to you, O Lord.

For the welfare of your whole creation and for the whole human race, that our reverence may be increased before the mystery of life; and  grant us new insight into your purposes for the human race, and new wisdom and determination in making provision for its future in accordance with your will,

We pray to you, O Lord.

For this community, for those in our community who are in need, that we may reach out our hands in love to share your love and resources with all in need of your love and care,

We pray to you, O Lord.

For the upcoming election, that we may be guided in the election of officials and representatives, that by faithful administration and wise law, the rights of all may be protected and our nation be enabled to fulfill your purposes,

We pray to you, O Lord.

For those on our prayer list  (names on the prayer list will be read here) that  they may experience your healing presence in the midst of their troubles.

We pray to you, O Lord.

For those who serve in our military, especially (names on the prayer list will be read here)  that they may be defended day by day with your heavenly grace, that they may be strengthened in their trials and temptations, that they may find the courage to face the dangers  that beset them, and that they may have a sense of your abiding presence with them.

We pray to you, O Lord.

For the great cloud of witnesses who serve you in eternal joy, and especially for those who have gone before us in this year just past. We remember them before you this day, and thank you for giving them to us to know and to love as companions on our earthly pilgrimages.

For those we love, but see no longer:  Grant them your peace; let light perpetual shine upon them; and in your loving wisdom and almighty power, work in them the good purpose of your perfect will; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

We pray to you, O Lord.

Hear now, O Lord, the prayers and petitions of your people which we offer to you now either silently or aloud.

(Silence)

Almighty God, by your Holy Spirit you have made us one with your saints in heaven and on earth:  Grant that in our earthly pilgrimage we may always be supported by this fellowship of love and prayer, and know ourselves to be surrounded by their witness to your power and mercy.  We ask this for the sake of Jesus Christ, in whom all our intercessions are acceptable through the Spirit, and who lives and reigns for ever and ever.

Amen.

Blessing of a Dogwood Tree

“He that plants trees loves others besides himself.”  Thomas Fuller

A reading from the Prophet Isaiah

For you shall go out in joy,

And be led back in peace; the mountains and the hills before you shall burst into song,

And all the trees of the field will clap their hands.

Instead of the thorn shall come up the cypress;

Instead of the brier shall come up the myrtle; and it shall be to the Lord for a memorial,

For an everlasting sign that shall not be cut off.

Let us pray.

O God, Creator of heaven and earth, you have filled our world with beauty.  Open our eyes to behold your gracious hand in all your works, that rejoicing in your whole creation, we may learn to serve you with joy and gladness, for the sake of your son, Jesus Christ, through whom all things were made.  Amen.

L. For Elizabeth and Jim, for their generosity in sharing with us a wondrous piece of your creation

C.  We thank you, good Lord.

L.  For their gift and for the blessing of this dogwood tree

C.  We thank you, good Lord.

L.  For the carbon dioxide that this tree breathes in and the oxygen that this tree breathes out, so that we in turn may breathe deeply of Your refreshing air

C. We thank you, good Lord.

L.  For the changing of the seasons, for the seasons of this tree, with its rusty red leaves and red berries, providing food for the birds in autumn, for its naked branches that will be etched against a gray winter sky, for the white cross shaped blooms beckoning us into Easter joy, and for its green leaves that will provide summer shade

C.  We thank you, good Lord.

L.  For the beauty of this churchyard, its trees, shrubs, flowers and grass, and for the fact that your creation is so present and visible with us as we gather to worship you

C.  We thank you, good Lord.

L.  We thank you for the river flowing past us, a reminder of time passing like an everlasting stream and your eternal and timeless love for us

C.  We thank you, good Lord.

L.  For all of Your creation and your watchfulness over it, for your love for all that You have made, and for Your love and care for us

C.  We thank you, good Lord.

Let us pray in the words of the prophet Jeremiah.

Blessed are those who trust in the Lord

Whose trust is in the Lord

They shall be like a tree planted by water,

Sending out its roots by the stream.

It shall not fear when the heat comes

And its leaves shall stay green;

In the year of drought it is not anxious,

And it does not cease to bear fruit.

Amen

May the breath of God, that composes the songs of the birds, and the whispering of the wind in the leaves of the trees, breathe peace on us now, and beautify our souls, and the blessing of God, almighty creator, and his son Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit, whose breath blew over creation, be with us all, now and forever.  Amen.

St Catherine’s labyrinth

“Imagine a circle traced on the ground and in its center a tree sprouting,  with a shoot grafted into its side.  The tree finds its nourishment in the soil within the expanse of the circle, but uprooted from the soil it would die fruitless.  So think of the soul as a tree made for love and living and living only by love.  The circle in which this tree’s root , the soul’s , must grow, is true knowledge of herself, knowledge that is joined to Me, who like the circle, has neither beginning nor end.  You can go round and round within this circle, finding neither end nor beginning, yet never leaving the circle.  So the tree of charity is nurtured in humility and branches out in true discernment.  To Me this tree yields the fragrance of glory and praise to my name and so it does what I created it for and comes at last to its goal, to Me, everlasting life.”

 Heimbach Dogwood Tree

For in the true nature of things, if we rightly consider, every green tree is far more glorious than if it were made of gold and silver.

 Martin Luther

Blessing of the Animals, Oct 8, 2011

The Blessing of the Pets

Leader:    Bless the Lord, all you his creatures.

All:  And forget not all his benefits.

Leader:  Let us pray.

Almighty and everlasting God, you made the universe with all its marvelous order, its atoms, worlds, and galaxies, and the infinite complexity of living creatures:  Grant that, as we celebrate the mysteries of your creation, we may come to know you more truly, and more surely fulfill our role in your eternal purpose; in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.

Almighty God, Creator of heaven and earth, with your breath you gave life to all creatures, and declared them good.  Keep us mindful of this first, most holy blessing as we gather here today to offer our own blessings upon these, our companion animals.  Remind us always that we were created in your image—the image of a loving and compassionate God.  And in this image we are called to care for your creation.  Open our hearts and minds to the lessons we may learn from our companions; to live fully in the present, to love unconditionally, to face each day expecting joy.  Help us always to do your will on earth, so that you may look upon our work and declare it good.  Amen.

(Lynn L. Caruso)

A Reading from the Book of Job.

But ask the animals, and they will teach you;

The birds of the air, and they will tell you;

Ask the plants of the earth, and they will teach you;

And the fish of the sea will declare to you.

Who among all these does not know that the hand of the Lord has done this?

In his hand is the life of every living thing

And the breath of every human being.

Leader:  The Word of the Lord.

All:  Thanks be to God.

Psalm 148

Alleluia!

Praise the Lord from the heavens;

Praise him in the heights.

Praise him, all you angels of his;

Praise him, all his host.

Praise him, sun and moon;

Praise him, all you shining stars.

Praise him, heaven of heavens,

And you waters above the heavens.

Let them praise the name of the Lord;

For he commanded and they were created.

He made them stand fast for ever and ever,

He gave them a law which shall not pass away.

Praise the Lord from the earth,

You sea-monsters and all deeps;

Fire and hail, snow and fog,

Tempestuous wind, doing his will,

Mountains and all hills,

Fruit trees and all cedars;

Wild beast and all cattle,

Creeping things and winged birds;

Kings of the earth and all peoples,

Princes and all rulers of the world;

Young men and maidens,

Old and young together.

Let them praise the name of the Lord,

For his name only is exalted,

His splendor is over earth and heaven.

He has raised up strength for his people,

And praise for all his loyal servants,

The children of Israel, a people who are near him.

Alleluia!

A reading from the Gospel according to Matthew

Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, or about your body, what you will wear.  Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing?  Look at the birds of the air; they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them.  Are you not of more value than they?  And can any of you by worrying add a single hour to your span of life?  And why do you worry about clothing?  Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not clothed like one of these…But strive first for the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.

The Blessing of the Pets

Please place your hand upon your companion as we read this blessing together.

Leader:  Upon the Earth with gentle caregivers

All:   With gentle caregivers this companion is blessed.

Leader:  Upon the Earth with wanderings through green spaces

All:  Through green spaces this companion is blessed.

Leader:  Upon the Earth with long naps in a patch of sun

All :  In a patch of sun this companion is blessed.

Leader:  Upon the Earth with food for the body and a home for comfort

All:  With food and home this companion is blessed.

Leader:  Upon the Earth with wild cousins—the wolf and lynx and eagle

All:  With wild cousins this companion is blessed.

Leader:  Upon the Earth with gentle caregivers

All:  With gentle caregivers this companion is blessed.

Live without fear.  Your creator loves you, made you holy and has always cared for you.  Go in peace to follow the good road, and may God’s blessing be with you always.  Amen.  (Bishop Mark S. Sisk)

Litany of Thanksgiving

All:  We thank you, Lord.
