The Sixteenth Sunday after Pentecost, Year A

Morning Prayer, Rite I

The Ringing of the Bell

Thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy,”I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones.” Isaiah 57:15

Let us humbly confess our sins unto Almighty God. (Silence is kept.)

Almighty and most merciful Father, we have erred and strayed from thy ways like lost sheep, we have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts, we have offended against thy holy laws, we have left undone those things which we ought to have done, and we have done those things which we ought not to have done. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us, spare thou those who confess their faults, restore thou those who are penitent, according to thy promises declared unto mankind in Christ Jesus our Lord; and grant, O most merciful Father, for his sake, that we may hereafter live a godly, righteous, and sober life, to the glory of thy holy Name. Amen

The Almighty and merciful Lord grant you absolution and remission of all your sins, true repentance, amendment of life, and the grace and consolation of his Holy Spirit. Amen.

The Invitatory and Psalter

O Lord, open our lips.

And our mouth shall proclaim your praise

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen

The mercy of the Lord is everlasting: O come, let us adore him.

Jubilate Psalm 100 (said together in unison)

O be joyful in the Lord all ye lands;
Serve the Lord with gladness
And come before his presence with a song.

Be ye sure that the Lord he is God;
It is he that hath made us and not we ourselves;
We are his people and the sheep of his pasture.

O go your way into his gates with thanksgiving
And into his courts with praise;
Be thankful unto him and speak good of his name.

For the Lord is gracious;
His mercy is everlasting;
And his truth endureth from generation to generation.

Psalm 25: 1-8 (Lectionary Insert)

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen

A Reading from Ezekiel 18:1-4, 25-32 (Lectionary Insert)

Canticle 2—A Song of Praise Benedictus es, Domine (Read in unison)

Blessed art thou, O Lord God of our fathers;
Praised and exalted above all for ever.
Blessed art thou for the Name of thy Majesty;
Praised and exalted above all for ever.
Blessed art thou in the temple of thy holiness;
Praised and exalted above all for ever.
Blessed art thou that beholdest the depths, and dwelleth between the Cherubim;
Praised and exalted above all for ever.
Blessed art thou on the glorious throne of thy kingdom;
Praised and exalted above all for ever.
Blessed art thou in the firmament of heaven;
Praised and exalted above all for ever.
Blessed art thou, O Father, Son and Holy Spirit;
Praised and exalted above all for ever.

A Reading from Philippians 2:1-13 (Lectionary Insert)

Canticle 7 We Praise Thee Te Deum laudamus (Read in unison)

We praise thee, O God; we acknowledge thee to be the Lord.
All the earth doth worship thee, the Father everlasting.
To thee all Angels cry aloud,
The Heavens and all the Powers therein.
To thee Cherubim and Seraphim continually do cry:
    Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of Sabaoth;
    Heaven and earth are full of the majesty of thy glory.
The glorious company of the apostles praise thee.
The goodly fellowship of the prophets praise thee.
The noble army of martyrs praise thee.
The holy Church throughout all the world doth acknowledge thee,
    The Father, of an infinite majesty,
    Thine adorable, true, and only Son,
    Also the Holy Ghost, the Comforter.
Thou art the King of glory, O Christ.
Thou art the everlasting Son of the Father.
When thou tookest upon thee to deliver man,
Thou didst humble thyself to be born of a Virgin.
When thou hadst overcome the sharpness of death,
Thou didst open the kingdom of heaven to all believers.
Thou sittest at the right hand of God, in the glory of the Father.
We believe that thou shalt come to be our judge.
    We therefore pray thee, help thy servants,
    Whom thou hast redeemed with thy precious blood.
    Make them to be numbered with thy saints,
    In glory everlasting.

A Reading from Matthew 21:23-32 (Lectionary Insert)

The Sermon                                                                                                   The Rev. Catherine Hicks

The Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth;
And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by
the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, dead, and buried. He descended into hell. The third day
he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven, and sitteth
on the right hand of God the Father almighty. From thence he shall
come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the
holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of
sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen

The Offertory

The Prayers

The Lord be with you.

And also with you.

Let us pray.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom
come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we
forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into
temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and
the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

Suffrages

V. O Lord, show thy mercy upon us;

R.And grant us your salvation.

V. Endue thy ministers with righteousness;

V. Lord, keep this nation under your care;

R.And guide us in the way of justice and truth.

V. Let thy way be known upon earth;

R.Thy saving health among all nations.

V. Let not the needy, O Lord, be forgotten;

R.Nor the hope of the poor be taken away.

V. Create in us clean hearts, O God;

R.And sustain us with your Holy Spirit.

Collect for the 16th Sunday after Pentecost

A Collect for Guidance Said together in unison)

O heavenly Father, in whom we live and move and have our being: We humbly pray thee so to guide and govern us by thy Holy Spirit, that in all the cares and occupations of our life we may not forget thee, but may remember that we are ever walking in thy sight; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

For those in the Armed Forces of our Country

Almighty God, we commend to your gracious care and keeping all the men and women of our armed forces at home and abroad, especially those on our prayer list. (Read prayer list here). Defend them day by day with your heavenly grace; strengthen them in their trials and temptations; give them courage to face the perils which beset them; and grant them a sense of your abiding presence wherever they may be; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Prayers for the Sick

Heavenly Father, giver of life and health; Comfort and relieve your sick servants, especially those on our prayer list. (Read prayer list here). Give your power of healing to those who minister to their needs, that they may be strengthened in their weakness and have confidence in your loving care; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

A Prayer for Mission

Lord Jesus Christ, who didst stretch out thine arms of love on the hard
wood of the cross that everyone might come within the reach of thy
saving embrace; So clothe us in thy Spirit that we, reaching forth our
hands in love, may bring those who do not know thee to the
knowledge and love of thee; for the honor of thy Name. Amen.

A General Thanksgiving

Almighty God, Father of all mercies, we thine unworthy servants do
give thee most humble and hearty thanks for all thy goodness and
loving-kindness to us and to all men. We bless thee for our creation,
preservation, and all the blessings of this life; but above all for thine
inestimable love in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus
Christ; for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory. And, we
beseech thee, give us that due sense of all thy mercies, that our
hearts may be unfeignedly thankful; and that we show forth thy
praise, not only with our lips, but in our lives, by giving up our selves
to thy service, and by walking before thee in holiness and
with thee and the Holy Spirit, be all honor and glory, world without
tend. Amen.

A Prayer of St. Chrysostom

Almighty God, who hast given us grace at this time with one
accord to make our common supplication unto thee; and
hast promised through thy well-beloved Son that when two
or three are gathered together in his Name thou wilt be in the
midst of them: Fulfill now, O Lord, our desires and petitions
of thy servants as may be best for us; granting us in this
world knowledge of thy truth, and in the world to come life
everlasting. Amen.

Glory to God, whose power, working in us, can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine: Glory to him from generation to generation in the Church, and in Christ Jesus for ever and ever. Amen.

Sixteenth Sunday after Pentecost

September 28, 2014, 9am

"A man had two sons; he went to the first and said, `Son, go and work in the vineyard today.’ He answered, `I will not’; but later he changed his mind and went. The father went to the second and said the same; and he answered, `I go, sir’; but he did not go. Which of the two did the will of his father?” – Matthew 21:28-31
