The Ringing of the Bell

Prelude

Opening Hymn                                                  O Jesus, I have promised                                                                    H 655

Send out your light and your truth, that they may lead me, and bring me to your holy hill and to your dwelling. Ps 43:3

Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor (Silence is kept)

Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive us all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen

The Invitatory and Psalter

Lord, open our lips.

And our mouth shall proclaim your praise

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen

The earth is the Lord’s for he made it:

O come, let us adore him.

Venite To God with gladness sing (sung to Darwall’s 148th)

To God with gladness sing, your Rock and Savior bless;
Into his temple bring your songs of thankfulness!
O God of might, to you we sing

Enthroned as King on heaven’s height!

God cradles in his hand the heights and depths of earth;
God made the sea and land, God brought the world to birth!
O God most high, we are your sheep;
On us you keep your shepherd’s eye!

Your heavenly Father praise, acclaim his only Son,
Your voice in homage raise to him who makes all one!
O Dove of peace, on us descend
That strife may end and joy increase!

Psalm 145:1-8 (Lectionary Insert)

A Reading from Jonah 3:10-4:11 (Lectionary Insert)

Canticle M A Song of Faith –I Peter 1:3-4, 18-21 (Said together in unison)

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
By divine mercy we have a new birth into a living hope;
Through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
We have an inheritance that is imperishable in heaven.
The ransom that was paid to free us
Was not paid in silver or gold,
But in the precious blood of Christ,
The Lamb without spot or stain.
God raised Jesus from the dead and gave him glory
So that we might have faith and hope in God.

A Reading from Philippians 1:21-30 (Lectionary Insert)

Canticle P A Song of the Spirit—Revelation 22:12-17 (Said together in unison)

“Behold, I am coming soon,” says the Lord,
“And bringing my reward with me,
to give to everyone according to their deeds.
“I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last,
the beginning and the end.”
Blessed are those who do God’s commandments,
that they may have the right to the tree of life,
and may enter the city through the gates.
“I, Jesus, have sent my angel to you,
with this testimony for all the churches.
“I am the root and the offspring of David,
I am the bright morning star.”
“Come!” say the Spirit and the Bride;
“Come!” let each hearer reply!
Come forward, you who are thirsty,
Let those who desire take the water of life as a gift

A Reading from Matthew 20:1-16 (Lectionary Insert)

The Sermon                                                                                                                                                   Elizabeth Heimbach

The Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and
earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He
was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the
Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died,
and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he
rose again. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand
of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the
dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the
communion of saints, the forgivenss of sins, the resurrection of
the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

The Offertory

The Prayers

The Lord be with you.

And also with you.

Let us pray.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom
come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we
forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into
temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and
the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

Suffrages

Show us your mercy, O Lord;

And grant us your salvation.

Clothe your ministers with righteousness;

Let your people sing with joy.

Give peace, O Lord, in all the world;

For only in you can we live in safety.

Lord, keep this nation under your care;

And guide us in the way of justice and truth.

Let your way be known upon earth;

Your saving health among all nations.

Let not the needy, O Lord, be forgotten;

Nor the hope of the poor be taken away.

Create in us clean hearts, O God;

And sustain us with your Holy Spirit.

Collect for the 15th Sunday after Pentecost

A Prayer of Self Dedication (Said together in unison)

Almighty and eternal God, so draw our hearts to you, so guide our minds, so fill our imaginations, so control our wills, that we may be wholly yours, utterly dedicated to you, and then use us, we pray, as you will, and always to your glory and the welfare of your people, through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.

A Prayer for Mission

O God, you have made of one blood all the peoples of the earth, and sent your blessed Son to preach peace to those who are far off and to those who are near: Grant that people everywhere may seek after you and find you; bring the nations into your fold; pour out your Spirit upon all flesh; and hasten the coming of your kingdom, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

For those in the Armed Forces of our Country

Almighty God, we commend to your gracious care and keeping all the men and women of our armed forces at home and abroad, especially those on our prayer list. (Read prayer list here). Defend them day by day with your heavenly grace; strengthen them in their trials and temptations; give them courage to face the perils which beset them; and grant them a sense of your abiding presence wherever they may be; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Prayers for the Sick

Heavenly Father, giver of life and health; Comfort and relieve your sick servants, especially those on our prayer list. (Read prayer list here). Give your power of healing to those who minister to their needs, that they may be strengthened in their weakness and have confidence in your loving care; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayers for those who mourn

Most merciful God, whose wisdom is beyond our understanding: Deal graciously with those who mourn. Surround them with your love, that they may not be overwhelmed by their loss, but have confidence in your goodness, and strength to meet the days to come; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

A General Thanksgiving

Almighty God, Father of all mercies, we your unworthy servants give
you humble thanks for all your goodness and loving-kindness to us and
to all whom you have made. We bless you for our creation,
preservation, and all the blessings of this life; but above all for your
immeasurable love in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus
Christ; for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory. And we pray,
give us such an awareness of your mercies, that with truly thankful
hearts we may show forth your praise, not only with our lips, but in
our lives, by giving up ourselves to your service, and by walking before
you in holiness and righteousness all our days; through Jesus Christ
our Lord, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory
throughout all ages. Amen.

Closing Hymn                              Rise up, ye saints of God                                        H 551

Glory to God, whose power, working in us, can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine: Glory to him from generation to generation in the Church, and in Christ Jesus for ever and ever. Amen.

Fifteenth Sunday after Pentecost

September 21, 2014, 11am

""Now when the first came, they thought they would receive more; but each of them also received the usual daily wage. And when they received it, they grumbled against the landowner, saying, `These last worked only one hour, and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the day and the scorching heat.’ But he replied to one of them, `Friend, I am doing you no wrong; did you not agree with me for the usual daily wage? Take what belongs to you and go; I choose to give to this last the same as I give to you. Am I not allowed to do what I choose with what belongs to me? Or are you envious because I am generous?’ So the last will be first, and the first will be last.” – Matthew 20:10-16
