Our canticles today, “A Song of Hosea” and “A Song of Christ’s Humility” are from Enriching Our Worship 1. The Song of Hosea has within it the themes of humility and justice that are found in today’s readings, as well as the image of light, so appropriate for the season of Epiphany. “The Song of Christ’s Humility” describes the way in which Jesus lived as one of us, and emptied himself, humbly taking the form of a servant in order to show us how we are to live as his disciples. These canticles were chosen for today’s service because of the ways in which they illustrate and enhance today’s lectionary readings.
Our final hymn today is “Blest are the Pure in Heart.” We will be singing this hymn to the familiar tune which we know as the tune for “Rejoice Ye Pure in Heart.” Therefore at the end of each verse, we will be adding the following refrain, “Rejoice, rejoice, rejoice, give thanks and sing.”
Hosea 6:1-3
who has torn us and will heal us.
God has struck us and will bind up our wounds,
after two days revive us,
On the third day restore us,
that in God’s presence we may live.
Let us humble ourselves, let us strive to know the Lord,
whose justice dawns like the morning light,
its dawning as sure as the sunrise.
God’s justice will come to us like a shower,
like spring rains that water the earth.
Philippians 2:6-11
Christ Jesus did not cling to equality with God,
But emptied himself, taking the form of a servant,
and was born in human likeness.
Being found in human form, he humbled himself
and became obedient to death, even death on a cross.
Therefore, God has highly exalted him
and given him the name above every name,
That at the name of Jesus, every knee shall bow,
in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
And every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord,
to the glory of God the Father.
