Parish Meeting 2012 - Outreach, 2011

Outreach at St. Peters's in 2011
Outreach is a visible and tangible manifestation of Church life and living out the Gospel and our role as disciples.
It is a good time to review our Outreach since this is the time of the Congregational Meeting and also the end of the 2011 year.
During 2011, we were fortunate to have two new groups participating Outreach - ECW Evening group and the ECM as well as the main ECW group. We also established an Outreach Committee to provide coordination and guidance late in 2011
Outreach, however, was challenged by new events both international and local:

Internationally, the situation in Somalia was desperate with tens of thousands of Somalis already dead and more than 500,000 children on the brink of starvation. It was a struggle getting trained personnel there due to internal conditions. Johnny Davis led the effort to deliver monies through ERD and spoke in Church about the tragedy.
Locally, we were ravaged by an earthquake, a hurricane and flooding conditions not to mention our own food crisis which brought more people to go to places like Cerve in Caroline County.

We responded with our Community Dinner program, a free meal about every 3 months for the town of Port Royal. They began in June and were held also in September and November. It was funded in part by a Mustard Seed Grant.
We also distributed free school supplies at the September event.
Another new ministry a Jail Ministry for the Peumansend Creek Regional Jail was organized by Laurel Ameen. Volunteers began the training in late 2011 and early 2012.
Thanksgiving featured the Samaritan Purse box project led by Nancy Long. In addition to donating almost 20 shoeboxes to the project, we also donated the cash received from our joint worship service with Memorial Baptist on the afternoon of November 20th to Operation Christmas Child.
Christmas centered on helping special families by both ECW's and ECM. The Vestry also included an international project, Nets For Life, which helps provide mosquito netting for Africa. They have reached 24 million people with their programs
You can explore all of our Outreach events on the Outreach page for 2011 events.

New this year is an interactive Outreach Map and table located here. It hightlights ECW's contributions to Outreach in 2011
The key to the letters are to the right of the map. You can enlarge a region of the map (such as Virginia) by <double clicking> the area around the region. After five "double-clicks" on the area around Virginia you see the following:

You can click on the red markers for details of the gifts.
Some of the international markers have details about the charities activities - website, what they do, where they work, their programs and successes. Some have videos. Here is the one for Heifer as an example. You can go directly to their website, see our summary of their activities under "Program information about Heifer...", watch the video.
