The Reverend Catherine Hicks, Deacon-in-Charge at St Peter’s earned her Master of Divinity degree from Virginia Theological Seminary. She graduated cum laude in May, 2010, and was ordained to the transitional diaconate in the Diocese of Virginia in June, 2010. Catherine describes herself as a committed Christian, who brings to parish ministry her gifts and real life experiences in education, marriage, motherhood, discipleship, teaching, writing, pastoral care, organization-building and professional social work. Her daily spiritual disciplines include contemplative and intercessory prayer and reading the Daily Office and walking the labyrinth when possible. She enjoys experimenting with many different types of prayer. She receives spiritual direction and is committed to the discipline of a retreat for refreshment and renewal each year. Catherine serves on the Committee on the Stewardship of Creation in the Diocese of Virginia.
Catherine is also a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in the Commonwealth of Virginia. She graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2001 with an MSW (Master’s degree in social work), and earned a Certificate in Aging Studies that same year from the Medical College of Virginia. Catherine is completing her training to become a spiritual director, currently working to complete a Certificate in Spiritual Direction Studies from Washington Theological Union in Washington, DC.
Catherine loves to be outside. She enjoys gardening and walking as an almost daily exercise. She spends a week at Emerald Isle, NC, with her extended family every summer. Shrinemont is one of her favorite places. She enjoys all sorts of music, being with people of all ages, reading, playing with her cats, savoring chocolate, creating collages, writing, and traveling.
Catherine’s family is one of her greatest blessings. She is married to Ben Hicks. She and Ben have three daughters, Elizabeth (married to Steve), Catherine, and Mary Lawrence.
