Lent 1, Feb. 14, 2016

Bishop Gulick will be visiting us on Feb. 14, 2016, Lent 1. Note it will be a 2pm service.

Bishop Gulick grew up in Virginia and attended St. Stephen’s Catlett. From 1965 to 1970 Bishop Gulick worked at Shrine Mont, first as a counselor-in-training, then cabin counselor, and finally as assistant director of St. Georges camps. After graduating from Lynchburg College he went to Seminary at VTS. After serving two parishes, he became the diocesan bishop of Kentucky from 1994-2010. He returned to Virginia as Assistant bishop on January 1, 2011. He has led the focus on the renovation of Shrine Mont Camps and using them as labs of leadership for young adults.

The scripture that day is Luke 4:1-13. Lent 1 is the story of the devil tempting Jesus in the desert. This year we hear Lukes version. Following his baptism, Jesus went out into the desert for forty days during which time he ate nothing. Knowing that Jesus would be hungry, the devil tempted him to turn a stone into bread. When Jesus did not, the devil showed him all the kingdoms of the earth, promising Jesus all the glory and power of them if Jesus would worship the devil. Again Jesus refused. Finally, Satan took Jesus to the top of the temple in Jerusalem and told him to jump because God’s angels would save him. Jesus refused each of the three temptations by quoting scripture from the book of Deuteronomy thus making clear his obedience to God.
