ECM June 9, 2012

On June 9th, thirteen men of St. Peter’s Church met at Horne’s for their regularly scheduled meeting. Helmut Linne von Berg gave a devotional that centered on families of German ancestry who came to this country in the second half of the Nineteenth Century and built banking empires that later funded much of the Industrial Revolution here in America.

These families stood on principles of honesty, hard work, mutual support and respect that should be a lesson to all of us living today. Additionally, Helmut discovered Ben Franklin’s Virtues in his research. These were thirteen different words of advice that covered behavior in the following areas: temperance, silence, order, resolution, frugality, industry, sincerity, justice, moderation, cleanliness, tranquility, chastity, and humility. Reviewing these subjects and their application in today’s world provoked a lively discussion. It was mostly agreed that they have just as much validity in today’s world as they did two hundred and fifty years ago.

The group made plans for a one year Anniversary dinner to be held on July 14th, at the Reynolds Pavilion starting at 5:00 pm. All St. Peter’s men are invited and it promises to be a nice evening. Those wishing to attend need to confirm with David Beck. He can be reached at 804-742-5056 and the earlier the better.
