Morning Prayer, Rite II

Ringing of the Bell

Prelude

Opening Hymn                            Immortal, invisible, God only wise                         H 423

Opening Sentence

I was glad when they said to me, “Let us go to the house of the Lord.” Psalm 122:1

Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor. (Silence is kept.)

Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen.

The Invitatory and Psalter

Lord, open our lips.

And our mouth shall proclaim your praise.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. Alleluia.

Venite To God with gladness sing (sung to Darwall’s 148th)

To God with gladness sing, your Rock and Savior bless;
Into his temple bring your songs of thankfulness!
O God of might, to you we sing
Enthroned as King on heaven’s height!
God cradles in his hand the heights and depths of earth;
God made the sea and land, God brought the world to birth!
O God most high, we are your sheep;
On us you keep your shepherd’s eye!
Your heavenly Father praise, acclaim his only Son,
Your voice in homage raise to him who makes all one!
O Dove of peace, on us descend
That strife may end and joy increase!

The mercy of the Lord is everlasting: Come let us adore him.

The Psalm                                       Psalm 30                            (Lectionary Insert)

The Lessons

A Reading from Wisdom of Solomon 1:13-15; 2:23-24      (Lectionary Insert)

Canticle J—A Song of Judith (Read together in unison)

Judith 16:13-16

I will sing a new song to my God,*
   for you are great and glorious, wonderful in strength, invincible.
Let the whole creation serve you,*
   for you spoke and all things came into being.
You sent your breath and it formed them,*
   no one is able to resist your voice.
Mountains and seas are stirred to their depths,*
   rocks melt like wax at your presence.
But to those who fear you,*
   you continue to show mercy.
No sacrifice, however pleasant, can please you,*
   but whoever fears the Lord shall stand in your sight forever.

A Reading from 2 Corinthians 8:7-15                                    (Lectionary Insert)

Canticle M: A Song of Faith (read together in unison)

1 Peter 1:3-4, 18-21

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,*
by divine mercy we have a new birth into a living hope;
Through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,*
we have an inheritance that is imperishable in heaven.
The ransom that was paid to free us*
was not paid in silver or gold,
But in the precious blood of Christ,*
the Lamb without spot or stain.
God raised Jesus from the dead and gave him glory*
so that we might have faith and hope in God.

A Reading from Mark 5:21-43                                                  (Lectionary Insert)

Sermon                                                                        The Rev. Catherine D. Hicks

The Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

The Prayers

The Lord be with you.
And also with you.
Let us pray.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

Suffrages

Show us your mercy, O Lord;
And grant us your salvation.
Clothe your ministers with righteousness;
Let your people sing with joy.
Give peace, O Lord, in all the world;
For only in you can we live in safety.
Lord, keep this nation under your care;
And guide us in the way of justice and truth.
Let your way be known upon earth;
Your saving health among all nations.
Let not the needy, O Lord, be forgotten;
Nor the hope of the poor be taken away.
Create in us clean hearts, O God;
And sustain us with your Holy Spirit.

Collect for the 5th Sunday after Pentecost                         (Lectionary Insert)

A Collect for Guidance (Read in Unison)

Heavenly Father, in you we live and move and have our being: We humbly pray you so to guide and govern us by your Holy Spirit, that in all the cares and occupations of our life we may not forget you, but may remember that we are ever walking in your sight; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

For the Human Family

O God, you made us in your own image and redeemed us through Jesus your Son: Look with compassion on the whole human family; take away the arrogance and hatred which infect our hearts; break down the walls that separate us; united us in bonds of love; and work through our struggle and confusion to accomplish your purposes on earth; that, in your good time, all nations and races may serve you in harmony around your heavenly throne; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

For Social Justice

Grant, O God, that your holy and life-giving Spirit may so move every human heart, and especially the hearts of the people of this land, that barriers which divide us may crumble, suspicions disappear, and hatreds cease; that our divisions being healed, we may live in justice and peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

(Sing “Our fathers’ God, to thee” here )

A Prayer for Mission

Lord Jesus Christ, you stretched out your arms of love on the hard wood of the cross that everyone might come within the reach of your saving embrace: So clothe us in your Spirit that we, reaching forth our hands in love, may bring those who do not know you to the knowledge and love of you; for the honor of your name. Amen.

A Prayer for Marion Mahoney

Loving God, we give you thanks and praise for Marion Mahoney and for the many gifts that she has shared with us in her time here in this congregation. We thank you for the time that she has spent with our children, we thank you for her leadership of the ECW, we thank you for her participation in our Bible study. We thank you for her art and for her poetry. And we remember her husband Tom this day. Watch over her and bless her as she departs from us and journeys with faith into a new place. Grant her new friends and fulfilling activities, and may her life be always full of Alleluias; through the love of your Son Jesus Christ and the power of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Almighty God, whose will for us all is health and salvation; we give you thanks and praise for the ongoing recovery of Stanley Fields, and ask that you would continue to fill him with Your strength and grace as he heals. Watch over his family and fill them with your abiding peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

For those on our prayer list

Merciful Lord, who has taught us in your holy Word that you do not willingly afflict or grieve us: Look with compassion upon the sorrows of those for whom we offer our prayers, for those on our prayer list and all of those for whom we now pray, either silently or aloud. (Silence) Remember them, O Lord, in your mercy, nourish their souls with patience, comfort them with a sense of your goodness, lift up your countenance upon them, and give them your peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

For those in the Armed Forces of our Country

Almighty God, we commend to your gracious care and keeping all the men and women of our armed forces at home and abroad, especially those on our prayer list. (Read prayer list here). Defend them day by day with your heavenly grace; strengthen them in their trials and temptations; give them courage to face the perils which beset them; and grant them a sense of your abiding presence wherever they may be; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

A General Thanksgiving

Almighty God, Father of all mercies, we your unworthy servants give you humble thanks for all your goodness and loving-kindness to us and to all whom you have made. We bless you for our creation, preservation, and all the blessings of this life; but above all for your immeasurable love in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ; for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory. And we pray, give us such an awareness of your mercies, that with truly thankful hearts we may show forth your praise, not only with our lips, but in our lives, by giving up ourselves to your service, and by walking before you in holiness and righteousness all our days; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory throughout all ages. Amen.

Closing Hymn                     O for a thousand tongues to sing                 H 493

Glory to God, whose power, working in us, can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine: Glory to him from generation to generation in the Church, and in Christ Jesus for ever and ever. Amen.

Amen

Fifth sunday After Pentecost

June 28, 2015, 11AM, Morning Prayer

"The Daughter of Jairus" – Carl Bloch (1834-1890)

“While he was still speaking, some people came from the leader’s house to say, "Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the teacher any further?" But overhearing what they said, Jesus said to the leader of the synagogue, "Do not fear, only believe."… When he had entered, he said to them, "Why do you make a commotion and weep? The child is not dead but sleeping." And they laughed at him. Then he put them all outside, and took the child’s father and mother and those who were with him, and went in where the child was. He took her by the hand and said to her, "Talitha cum," which means, "Little girl, get up!" And immediately the girl got up and began to walk about" –  Mark 5:38-43
